F-4 Phantom


I worked on the F-4 Phantom from 1987 to 1996. I was Comm/Nav, which meant I dealt with radios, radar, intercoms, IFF, Voice Warning, TACAN, Altmeters, and anything else that happened to talk to something else or told you where to go. I was very lucky to be able to work on the F-4's. Considering their long history, it is amazing they weren't retired sooner. I am of the opinion they should NEVER have been retired, but what do I know? The F-4 was not an easy plane to maintain. I once was of the opinion that all new avionic techs should be assigned to work F-4s as their first airframe, simply on the fact that after that, any other aircraft would be cake.

I recently joined an F-4 email list and from that I have gleaned a few videos, and sound files. As I gather more media, I will place it here.

I have a physical reaction when I see or hear the F-4. I am sure this isn't uncommon for anyone that has worked any sort of airframe. The bond to the plane is one that is hard to explain, but even after being out of the USAF for 8 years, my heart fills with pride for the Mighty F-4.

Fly Over

A "dash" 60 starting up. The -60 is a powercart used to provide power and air to aircraft. This machine scared the hell out of me on more than one occassion with its tendency to shoot fireballs out of its exhaust when starting up.
